Checks, in order

The order comes from the symptom you picked, so the first line is the one to check first.

Recorded means the game data states it for this process. Not recorded means the data has nothing to say about that step, so it is yours to confirm - never a claim that the step is fine.

Find the first broken stage

Six steps stand between a raw material and a finished product, and each one is either documented for this item or not. The first one that is not is where the chain stops being described.

First step with nothing confirmed: Supply

A step counts as confirmed when the game documents it for this item. A step left unconfirmed is not a broken chain: a station can still be fed by hand, or sit beside the step before it.

How automation flows

One automated line has more than one job in it. Goods move through stages, and a stage that stops stalls everything behind it.

  1. SourceThe resources and intermediate goods a step consumes, produced upstream or gathered.Browse inputs
  2. Transport inHow the input reaches the station: a porter route, a conveyor, or delivery by hand.See transport
  3. WorkstationThe building that runs the process. Its technology decides whether it exists at all.Browse workstations
  4. WorkerThe zombie or automatic mode that drives the process, with the tool and mastery it needs.Diagnose a target
  5. OutputWhat the process makes, and where it has to go before the next step can consume it.Plan the chain
  6. Transport outRemoving the finished goods. A full destination stops a line as effectively as a missing input.See transport

Producing and moving are separate jobs. A worker runs the process; getting the goods in and out is its own step, which is why a station can be fully staffed and still stand idle.

Plan a production area

A useful production area starts from a chain, not from a checklist: what supplies a workstation, what the workstation makes, and what consumes that output next. The worked chains below are the paths the published data records, stage by stage.

Four questions a layout has to answer

  • What supplies the station?
  • What drives the station?
  • What consumes the output next?
  • How do goods get in and out?

Worked chains

Browse automation by workstation

The workstations that run the most documented automated processes. Open one to see its setup, its workers and every process it can run.

See every workstation

A chain here is what the delivery records, not a recommended base layout: the data documents production, not placement. A stage whose ingredient list is only partly documented is marked as such.

Transport, suppliers and conveyors

Moving goods is a different job from producing them, and it is the layer most stalled factories are missing.

The automation methods, kept apart

  • Zombie worker

Runs a production process at a workstation.

  • Supplier and porter

Hauls inputs and finished goods between stations and storage. It produces nothing itself.

  • Conveyor

A fixed link between two stations that moves goods on its own.

  • Automatic station

A station the game can start without a worker once its inputs are connected.

  • Zombie resource worker

Gathers a raw resource instead of crafting an item.

Items with a documented porter route

Only the routes the production data names are listed here. No route listed for an item is not proof that nothing can move it.

Production chain

Each step shows the inputs it consumes, the workstation it runs on and the output it produces. Open a step to follow its own upstream production.

These counts describe the production the game documents so far. An item with no confirmed path is one nothing documented produces yet, not one that cannot be automated.

Which chains are documented end to end

Every confirmed chain is read the same way: is each input produced somewhere, is the workstation named, is the worker mode named. Supply is the step that decides which list an item lands in.

Steps with nothing confirmed

  • No outgoing route239 chains

Counted over the chains that already run a worker or an automatic station.

  • No incoming route179 chains

Counted over the chains that already run a worker or an automatic station.

  • No consumer or outgoing route159 chains

Counted over the chains that already run a worker or an automatic station.

  • An input with no producer115 chains

Counted over the chains that already run a worker or an automatic station.

An input with no producer is usually something you gather, buy or feed in yourself.

Choose a workstation

Unlock requirements

Automated production is gated by progression: a technology adds the workstation, and the workstation is what runs the process.

Technologies that add an automating workstation

Quests that gate an automated process

Automation does not open with a single switch: the technology adds the workstation, and the workstation is what runs the process. Technologies the published data does not name are not listed here.

High-dependency production inputs

These outputs feed the most documented automated processes. That is a dependency count from the game data, not a throughput measurement.

Why it ranks here

Ranked by how many automated processes consume each item, so you can decide what to keep supplied first. It is a dependency count, not a recommended order.

Where automation meets the rest of the game

Two systems decide whether a chain can run: the workers that drive it, and the factory it runs in.

Zombie workers

A zombie worker is one way to run a process. Creating workers, raising mastery and handing out tools belong to the worker system.

Factory automation

A factory is one place a chain runs. Conveyors, factory machines and power belong to the factory system.

Reported automation issues

Automation in the current release has open reports. Every entry states how strong its evidence is, so a forum post never reads like a verified rule.

  • Production stops when the output has nowhere to goDocumented

The data records an output destination for every automated process. When that destination is full, the workstation has nowhere to put its result.

  • A supplier or porter that does not deliverPlayer-reported

Players report stations that accept materials by hand while the supply worker never completes the transfer. Every documented requirement can still be met, so treat this as an open report rather than a rule.

  • Blocked access around a stationPlayer-reported

Some players report that a building placed over a station's access point can stop deliveries. The site data does not model placement, so check the space around the station yourself.

  • Known issues in the current releaseKnown issue

An issue is listed here only when it is documented outside player discussion. Community reports stay marked as reports until that happens.

Evidence is kept apart on purpose: a player report is a lead to check, not a mechanic. If every documented requirement is met and production still stops, treat it as a report and check the current build.

Automation FAQ

The questions players actually ask, answered from the production data and the checks you can run yourself.

Why is my zombie standing still?
A worker can be assigned and still not run a process. Work through the checks in order: the workstation, the automation method, the worker itself, its tool, mastery, the recipe unlock, the inputs, and the output side.
Learn how zombie workers themselves work →
Why aren't materials reaching the workstation?
Input delivery is its own step. The recipe can be valid and the inputs available while the transfer still fails, so check the route and the space around the station before rebuilding the production line.
Does every workstation need its own worker?
46 published workstation versions allow a zombie worker to be assigned, and some stations also run on their own once their inputs are connected. Open a workstation to see which methods it records.
What tool does a worker need?
10 workstations record a worker tool. Where the data names the tool, this page shows it; where it does not, the page says so instead of guessing.
Why does production stop after one craft?
A line that runs once and stalls is usually missing either a continuous input or free output space. Compare both sides before changing the recipe.
Can this item be automated?
270 of the 336 items with a documented automation answer have a confirmed automated production path. Search the item above to see its own answer.
Why is there no automated path for some items?
66 items carry a documented answer without a confirmed automated path. That is not the same as manual-only: the data simply does not document a process that produces them.
Can a porter move this item?
41 items have a named porter route, across 42 documented routes. The routes are listed with each item so you can see where the game moves it.
What is the difference between a supplier and a porter?
A supplier feeds the workers next to it, while a porter moves goods between stations and storage. Neither one crafts anything: a station still needs a worker or an automatic mode, and the two jobs are set up separately.

How do I automate Iron production?
Iron starts as ore from a mine, and smelting ore into an ingot at a furnace is a documented automated process. Open the iron ingot chain to see each step, where it runs, and the step still unconfirmed.
