Why can't I catch this fish?

Pick the fish you are after. Every condition the fishing data documents for it is listed, so you can work through them in order.

Which fish are you trying to catch?

To catch Bream, check:

Check these conditions
  1. The fishing area has to match

A fish is only selectable where the fishing spot's own area matches. Check you are fishing in one of the areas listed for this fish.

  2. The bait has to be one this fish accepts

A bait only works on a fish the fishing definition gives it a multiplier for. Casting a bait this fish does not accept removes it from the pick.

  3. The spot's stock may be empty

Each fishing spot holds a limited stock per fish. Catching lowers it, and a depleted fish disappears from the pick until it regenerates.

  4. Day and night change the odds

Day and night modify how likely a fish is, not whether it can be caught. The known fishing definitions only use positive weights, so time shifts the odds instead of blocking a species.

  5. A catch is a weighted pick

Selection weight is base weight × bait multiplier × time modifier × current stock. A fish with a small weight is a rarer pick, not an impossible one, so it can take several casts.

Every fishing condition the data documents for this fish is listed above.

This is what the fishing data states about the catch, not a reading of your save. Work through the conditions in order and fix the first one that does not match.

How fishing works

Four facts decide every catch. Nothing else in this game changes what bites.

  • The spot decides the pool

A fish is only in the pick where its fishing spot sits. Moving to another area changes which species are possible at all.

  • The bait decides which ones bite

Only baits the fish accepts are counted. A bait with a multiplier for that fish raises its share of the pick; an unaccepted bait removes it entirely.

  • Day and night shift the odds

The known fishing definitions use positive day and night weights, so time changes how likely a fish is rather than stopping it from appearing.

  • Stock runs out and regenerates

Each spot holds a limited number of each fish. Catching reduces it, and the spot refills up to its base stock over time.

A catch is a weighted pick, so a rare fish can take several casts even when every condition is right.

How to unlock fishing

Fishing starts with the rod the game's own technology unlocks, which keeps fishing a progression step rather than a starting ability.

  1. Unlock the technology
  2. Craft the rod
  3. Fish at a placed spot

Technology that unlocks a fishing rod

Quests that need a fish

Only the rod path the data documents is shown here. A rod the game does not attach to a technology is not listed, because this page never guesses an unlock order.

Fishing spots on the map

Every catch on this page is tied to a placed fishing spot, so the same answers exist as map locations.

The map tool shows the fishing layer with the fish that live in each spot. Until it ships, the area lists on this page are the fastest way to see what is where.

Common fishing problems

The questions players ask when nothing is biting, answered with what the fishing data actually documents.

I can't catch the fish I need
Open the fish's own answer above. It lists the areas it lives in, the bait it accepts and the stock behaviour of its spot, which is every reason the data gives for a fish not biting.
I can't reach the fishing spot
A fishing spot sits in an area, so reaching the area is what unlocks the spot. This hub names the area for every catch; the walkthrough covers the progression that opens areas.
A fish isn't appearing
Four things decide a catch: being in the right area, casting an accepted bait, the spot's stock not being depleted, and the weighted pick itself. Work through them in the check list above.
I don't know where to fish
Open the location list and pick the area you can reach. Every fish the data places there is listed with the bait it accepts.
I need a fish for a quest
Search the fish by name. When a published quest needs it, the quick answer names that quest and links straight to it, so you can see what else the quest asks for.
I want every fish in one area
Choose an area in the spot picker, or filter the browse list by area. Both read the same fishing data.
